Aguateca is located in an edge of the Petexbatún horst. There is an incredible chasm that runs through the site measuring 50 to 60 meters deep and 5 to 15 meters wide in most places. The earliest occupation of this partially reconstructed site has been dated from the Late Preclassic. Its architecture is very similar to that of Ceibal. A tour that involves also a boat ride of approximately one and a half hours passing through La Pasión River, Petexbatún River, Petexbatún Lagoon and Aguateca creek makes this trip extra adventurous and filled with scenery and birdwatching. If you're lucky, you may see turtles, crocodiles and iguanas along the way!
